WestAuckland turns out for AnzacDay – P4 Roosters front up against the Ponies – P27 Western Leader Thursday, April 28, 2016 YOUR PLACE, YOUR PAPER Avondale parent Ryan Spearman stands with his daughters Estelle, 3, left, and Clementine, 5, in front of bins, which are blocking the footpath next to Avondale Primary School. PHOTO: EVA CORLETT Rubbish day causes a stink EVACORLETT Rubbish day along part of Avondale’s main strip has become lifethreatening for school children, a parent says. Children are walking out onto busy Great North Rd to get around rubbish bins, which are blocking the footpath next to Avondale Primary School. Each Thursday morning, the council-owned bins belonging to residents at an apartment block, are dragged onto the footpath. Ordinarily, the bins sit on the footpath without issue. But due to a new construction site directly in front of the existing apartment block, the footpath has become narrower, making it difficult for people and prams to get through. Parent Ryan Spearman says it’s just a matter of time before someone is hit by a car. ‘‘It’s full speed,’’ Spearman says. ‘‘If you come here on a school day, it’s just bonkers up and down here.’’ Spearman says children, a walking school bus and parents use the path. ‘‘Worst case scenario is a kid, or mother with a baby, walks out onto the road and gets hit by someone driving.’’ Spearman’s daughter Clemen- tine, 5, says ‘‘it’s hard to walk past the bins’’. Property developer Jon Sandler is in charge of the established apartments and current construction site. He says the apartment block is complying with council instructions to place bins on the footpath. But he says creative solutions need to be explored to address issues around rubbish collection. ‘‘Intensification has created its own series of issues,’’ Sanders says. Spearman contacted council about the issue some months ago, but says it failed to follow up. Auckland Council’s general manager of waste solutions, Ian Stupple, says staff visited the site on April 21, after the Western Leader contacted them about Spearman’s concerns. Stupple says there were no bins causing concern at the site. ‘‘Council will send someone back to the site on [May 5] once school is back to ensure the bins are in a suitable position so the kids can safely use the footpath,’’ he says.
