This is a chance for all New Zealanders to have their say on how the MMP voting system might be improved,'' chief electoral officer Robert Peden says. It follows last year's referendum on the voting system. The majority of voters chose to retain MMP and the commission is now carrying out the review. You don't need to be an expert -- just have a view on how MMP might be improved. You can make your submissions by post, online or by email and can also pres- ent your submission at a public hearing,'' he says. The commission will look at issues including the vote threshold par- ties need to reach to gain seats in Parliament and whether candidates should be able to stand in an electorate and be on a party list. The deadline for gen- eral submissions is May 31. People who want to appear at a public hear- ing must have sub- missions in by April 5. Go to www.mmpreview. org.nz or call freephone 0800-36-76-56. Berries burst with flavour We invite readers to submit their favourite recipe. Each fortnight we will have a key ingredient to base your recipe on. They need to be homemade, easy enough for the home cook and use ingredients available from supermarkets or shops in our district. We will publish our favourite each fortnight. This week we have two recipes made from berries: Blueberry Relish 2 Tbsp diced red onion 1/4 cup balsamic vinegar 2 Tbsp sugar 1 Tbsp fresh lemon juice 1 1/2 cups blueberries Salt/pepper Cut up the onion in a food processor until it is chopped coarsely. Take it out and wipe the processor clean. Process all the other ingredients together until it has a relish-like texture. Fold the onion in and enjoy the relish with any meat. Serves approximately four people as a side. It's great with pork and you could add cranberries to serve with your Christmas dinner. Summer Refresher 1 punnet of blueberries 1 tsp lemon juice 2 tsp honey Top up of soda water Blend all the ingredients and pour into a tall glass. Add ice and enjoy. I haven't tried this with other berries but I imagine it would be great with a combination of red berries. Next time we would love to hear from readers if they have a homemade recipe with melons as the key ingredient. Please send recipes to dkchambers@ xtra.co.nz by February 23. Art on display Upstairs Gallery's latest exhibition featuring ceramics and watercolour opened this week. Bush, City and Sea by hand and by brush is a joint exhibition between ceramicist Jo McLean and water- colourist Grant Waugh which celebrates the beauty of New Zealand. The exhibition runs until March 11 on level one of Lopdell House, 418 Titirangi Rd, Titirangi. Visit www.upstairs.org.nz for more information.
