Photo: ELLA BROCKELSBY/PHOTOSPORT Waitangi weekend saw plenty of top level sport and west Aucklanders were leading the charge. Henderson resident DJ Forbes led New Zea- land to back-to-back victories at the Welling- ton Sevens as his side coasted to a 24-7 win over Fiji in the cham- pionship final. The captain scored one of four tries as New Zea- land move to top of the standings in the World Sevens circuit. The Las Vegas tourna- ment is being held this weekend. The Cook Islands team, which included four west Aucklanders, managed to make it to the shield final but lost to Scotland 19-17. Henderson's Jamie Makara, a former peace keeper in the New Zea- land Defence Force, was part of the team. In the cricket Martin Guptill starred with the bat in both one-day internationals against Zimbabwe. The Suburbs New Lynn batsman scored 70 in Dunedin and 77 in Whangarei as the Black Caps cruised to an expected series win. Guptill's former Sub- urbs teammate Tarun Nethula also made his debut for New Zealand in Whangarei. Meanwhile, the NRL and Super Rugby have already begun pre- season fixtures. The Warriors won 26-10 against the Gold Coast Titans at North Harbour Stadium, with Bay Roskill Vikings product Bill Tupou cross- ing the try line. Other west Auckland links with the Warriors include Ivan Penehe, Ben Henry and Sam and Sione Lousi. The Blues played the Hurricanes in their first Super Rugby pre-season game as the Blues won 36-22 with Kumeu's Anthony Boric scoring a try. Despite the Blues rep- resenting Auckland the Hurricanes have west Auckland representation in Massey rugby club members Tusi Pisi and Chris Smylie.
