By MATTHEW GRAY No one knows for sure why the Isabella De Fraine capsized and sank on the Hokianga bar on July 14, 1928. The tide was running high and the schooner was in capable hands. Witnesses from the shore could only speculate -- some thought maybe the rudder had come loose, throwing the vessel to the mercy of a heavy swell. Certainly the boat rolled over completely in the waves, drifting upside down for around 20 minutes before slowly turning over and sinking. All of its eight crew members were lost. Among them was Donald Joseph Teixeira, the 53 year-old mate who d occasionally taken charge of the ship in the absence of its captain. He was the son of a master mariner and a seasoned sailor who d spent most of his working life on the sea. He lived at Taupaki with his wife Roselina and was the father of an 18-year-old son and two daughters aged 8 and 15. Donald was no stranger to the west coast and its deceptively dangerous conditions -- neither was his captain, 47-year-old Arthur Berridge. The rudder theory therefore seemed all the more plausible given the skill and cautious natures of both men. The Isabella de Fraine was built in 1902 and very nearly came to grief in the same area a year earlier after striking a rock. The blow knocked a hole in the bow and the boat s crew worked hard to pump water from the hull as the captain made a course for the beach. The vessel was run up on the sand with all hands safe and accounted for before being repaired and put back into ser- vice. But the situation was quite dif- ferent the second time around when none of the crew had time to throw themselves clear. The boat sank at around 4pm and the first of the search parties summoned to help did not arrive until three hours later -- too late for anyone to find any trace of life. The other victims were A Kendrick, H Trevarthen, E Merritt, F Liewendahl, A Suvante and M Kennedy. The bodies of Donald and his captain were eventually located and buried at Waikumete Cem- etery.
