The transmission choice is obvi- ous. The six-speed manual version of the 1.4T is $1500 cheaper and ultimately quicker against the clock, but since the six-speed auto- matic transmission was refettled to Holden’s specifications last year after the initial Series I Cruzes’ disappointingly listless automatics, I could easily live with the automatic unit day to day. Its downshifts are almost pre- emptive, though it doesn’t kick down when it doesn’t need to, and while I can manually override the ‘box’ using the shift lever’s fore and aft shift function, I was happy to leave the unit to its own surprisingly unobtrusive devices. Specification levels for the Cruze hatches remain much the same as the sedans, which means at the top of the segment. The SRi and SRi-V models add a raft of new accoutrements, including a sports body kit; 17-inch alloy wheels; push-button key-in-the-pocket access and starting. The SRi-V adds sat-nav, full leather seating, as well as a 10-gigabyte hard drive and a CD/ MP3 compatible sound system that has the ability to record the radio. But it’s not the extra equipment and home comforts that makes me think that yes, maybe I would go for the SRi rather than the CD version of the Cruze 1.4T after all. It’s the seats. The entry-point Cruze seats are flat, lack support and don’t treat one’s bottom well, even with the help of one of the best chassis packs in the business. The SRi’s part leather seats with cloth wearing surfaces offer good shape, much more ‘give’ and plenty of adjustment, and while I know I have to pay for a lot more decoration and equipment that I don’t actually need to get them, it’s a price I’d be willing to pay, because it’s still several grand below some very popular but very cynically under-equipped Japanese offerings in the Cruze hatch’s market segment. Holden reckon the Cruze hatch will make about 50:50 of its sales against the sedan. I’m not so sure. It’s well enough placed price wise to make the hatch’s extra $500 increment unimportant. I called the refettled Cruze series II sedan the no-brainer in the C-segment. I have to change that now. The hatch is even bet- ter.
