Karyn Coleman, mother of three grown children is excited about her future and in 2012 will be taking on a conjoint degree - Bachelor of Arts majoring in law and psy- chology. Her academic career began last year with the New Start bridging pro- gramme at The Univer- sity of Auckland. Sixteen years ago while raising her chil- dren and working, Karyn had a workplace accident which left her unable to read even a single line of a book. It took her two years with the help of a teaching therapist for her to learn to read again. Last year, she felt the need to re evaluate her life and decided to embrace some longer term goals. I was unsure how to bridge the gap between my current circum- stances and the goals I wanted to achieve. Having read about the New Start programme I thought it could prove to be that necessary bridge,'' Karyn says. During my time at New Start, I was thrown some obstacles, including two surgeries and a broken arm. At the time I was mindful of Winston Churchill's words Diffi- culties mastered are opportunities won'. With the support of the staff at the New Start pro- gramme and the encour- agement of the friends I made at New Start, I was able to complete the programme. The experience was phenomenal. I was exposed to subjects and discovered interests I wasn't aware I had. Now, I'm so excited about the future and looking for- ward to working until I'm 80 doing something that I'm passionate about.'' Maria Meredith, New Start programme man- ager says: Karyn is just one of our New Start suc- cess stories -- there are many others. New Start is designed to prepare you for entry into a range of degrees at The University of Auckland. It is part time and there- fore accommodates those working full-time. We also help those who didn't achieve the necessary qualifications at school but still want to study at university.''
