MTA spokesperson Ana Zandi says that this is the start of a busy time for many parents. As well as the normal worries of dropping off and picking up children, there is, for many, the additional concern of things like stationery lists, new uniforms and out of school activities to consider. It's easy to be dis- tracted just by the sheer volume of things to be thinking about, hence people need to remind themselves that they are back into their routine.'' Statistics show that the peak times for injury accidents involving pedestrians coincides with school drop off and pick up times -- 8.00 to 9.00am and 3.00 to 4.00pm. All drivers, not just parents need to be totally aware of what's happening around school zones, school buses and daycare centres,'' Ana says. Safety has to be the first priority, even though this usually takes place when people typically have a lot on their minds. The rush to beat traffic and make appointments or start times can lead to drivers concentrating on their own needs at the ex- pense of children, students or other road users.'' New Zealand, like many other developed countries has seen a shift in transportation pat- terns around schools, especially in recent years. Many more parents drive their chil- dren to and from school, while there is a growing tendency for older secondary students to have a car at school. Both mean there is a lot more activity and con- gestion around what are often relatively limited pick-up and drop-off points around schools. Instances of double parking, passengers get- ting into and out of vehicles on the wrong' side and excessive speeds are commonplace outside many schools. Ana adds: We would urge those dropping chil- dren off at school or daycare to be especially careful as they start the year. Being safer around schools and daycares should be a priority, all year round.'' Things parents, carers and drivers can do include the following: Observe the posted speed limits outside schools and daycare centres, typically 30kph Ensure that who- ever is driving is appro- priately licensed to carry passengers Be familiar with school or daycare pick-up and drop-off points and procedures Don't double park -- a hazard at the best of times, it's especially dangerous where you can have children darting from between parked vehicles Agree safe proced- ures for children being picked up -- where to stand, when to cross, which door to get in and out of Be especially aware if you need to back your vehicle -- children are hard to spot from inside many vehicles Ensure kids are properly seated in appro- priate seats. If you are unsure whether they have been correctly installed, visit your near- est MTA member. IN BRIEF Back in black All three Detroit car- makers are expected to emerge from 2011 as profitable companies, the first time Chrysler, GM and Ford have all shown profits at the same time since 2004. GM is expected to post a $US6.1 billion profit, Ford is expected to score $US7 billion and Chrysler will be in the black but as yet by an undisclosed amount. World car sales Worldwide sales of passenger vehicles will jump to 77.7 million units this year from 72.8 million in 2011, Polk predicts. Global sales will climb to 96.3 million units by 2015. Most of the growth this year will occur in China (16 percent) and the U.S. (7 percent). US car sales up Asuresignofa recovering economy was last month's news that car and light truck sales in the US climbed to 1.24 million units for December compared with 1.14 million a year earlier. Demand for European (mostly luxury) brands there jumped by 25 percent to 122,400 units for the month, while full- year industry wide sales advanced 10 percent to a three-year high of 12.78 million cars and light trucks. Ill driver risks After seeing new research data showing that drivers suffering from a heavy cold or flu are less able to concern- trate when behind the wheel, GEM Motoring Assist in the UK is bringing a 'Don't Motor on Meds' leaflet to the attention of motorists. It offers guidance on being aware of how medication can affect driving and that it is actually illegal to drive when taking certain medicines.
