Surf lifesaving was set to be a difficult task because of access issues created by the deepening lagoon between the carpark and the clubhouse. That's no longer the case after excessive rain over Christmas and New Year. The rain flushed away sand which had caused the lagoon level to rise. The Western Leader reported on the issue in December. Lifeguards had to either take the long way around to the clubrooms via a bumpy 1km track or take a four-wheel-drive through the metre-deep lagoon. T h i sm e a n t1 5t o2 0m i n u t e delays, something they feared would have been costly in an emergency. The group were working with Auckland Council to come up with a short-term solution to ease the burden for the surf life saving season which was already well under way. The council decided against excavating a channel because it would take too long to apply for consent and it was exploring other options. Club spokesman Matt Wade says lifeguards are over the moon'' about the rain. It's absolutely fantastic. That's what we've been looking for and Mother Nature has delivered.'' Regional and specialist parks manager Mace Ward says unfortunately it is only a short- term solution.
