Website: www.rutherfordcollege.school.nz New Careers Academy Educational opportunities: Kelston Girls' College new trade academy offers a variety of career pathways. Kelston Girls' College was selected last year to establish a trade academy. The school has chosen an innovative approach: It will offer a variety of career pathways at the same time ensuring that students have sound basic business and IT skills. For example, young women may choose to focus on a career in early childhood, or in health, business or web design. As part of their introduction to the course, in semester one, they will receive basic training in business and IT as well as CV preparation, inter- view techniques, first aid certificate and drivers licence. The focus will be on ensuring that each student has achieved NCEA Level 2 by the end of the two year programme. Where possible she will have the opportunity to achieve a National Certificate in one of the Pathways such as National Certificate in Computing Level 2. From semester two, the student will spend one or two days a week gaining work place experience in her future career or attending a tertiary institution to further her qualifications. Principal Linda Fox says the school has conducted surveys in the community and tracked students leaving school to see which pathways the girls favour. Assistant principal Leanne Webb who will have responsibility for the programme management of the academy says the Careers Academy is an exciting real life learning opportunity for young women not wishing to follow an academic path. The Board chairman Dr James Prescott has expressed pleasure that the school had been success- ful in its application and explains that it is a first important step towards the Board's longer term plan to become a community college, providing edu- cational opportunities for women and girls of all ages. He says he and the principal Linda Fox are engaged in meetings with big businesses to bring them closer to that goal. Young women wishing to discover more about the academy can contact the school on 827-9622.
