Police were called to the acci- dent near Massey Primary School at about 6pm. The woman was one of four people injured in the crash. From bankruptcy to a sad end in Thames By MATTHEW GRAY Businessman: The gravestone of RobertCrompton Speer andan infantson carries an incorrect date of death. Bankrupt Robert Crompton Speer was granted an order of discharge in 1895 -- clearing his debts and paving the way for renewed busi- ness interests. The longtime Ponsonby resident was in Thames three years later with his wife Mary and celebrating a new career as licensee of the recently revamped Governor Bowen Hotel. The job was very different to the broad range of roles he'd held in past years -- but a fresh start none-the-less. Sadly it was to be short-lived. Robert contracted tuberculosis and died in the hotel on June 3, 1899, aged 57 -- his wife took her last breath less than a year later. The Irishman came to New Zea- land from County Derry in 1864 and first settled at Greymouth where he bought several mines. His managerial skills saw him employed by various companies on the west coast and in Auckland where he eventually entered into a partnership with grain and pro- duce merchant Alfred Jowitt. Robert's mining investments were lucrative enough to keep his large family clothed, fed and shel- tered -- records suggest he and his wife had 17 children in total, though a number died in infancy or childhood. The financial woes that led to his bankruptcy no doubt changed all of their circumstances so the prospect of a new life in Thames would have been much antici- pated. Robert soon made many friends in his new surrounds and tidings of his death were greeted with widespread sorrow. His last wish was to be buried in Waikumete Cemetery so his body was transported to Auckland aboard the paddle steamer Terranova for a graveside service officiated by the Reverend Robert Sommerville on June 6. The Governor Bowen Hotel was one of more than 100 pubs in and around Thames during the late 19th century. It was badly damaged by water and debris that swept through the township during a major flood in 1917. The old kauri building was subsequently demolished with its timbers, fittings and other chattels being auctioned on site a year later.
