Photos: VANITA PRASAD By VANITA PRASAD PETER and Deborah Gill breathed a sigh of relief on Tuesday morning as they watched a massive crane slowly unpack their shipping container, a survivor of the Rena disaster. The couple own Electro- Mechanical Fabrication in Henderson and spent the past 10 months waiting for the 18-tonne brake press they d bought from Germany to arrive. And it finally did last Friday --- completely unscathed. They bought the machine, which is used to bend and fold heavy steel, for $250,000 from a trade fair in Germany in March. It was then shipped to manufacturers in Turkey before being sent to New Zea- land. Itwasonthelastlegofa four continent journey in October when disaster struck. The Rena cargo ship carrying it hit the Astrolabe Reef near Tauranga. By lunchtime on October 5 I knew that our container was on it because of the ship- ping tracking number, Mr Gill says. It took a lot longer for us to figure out where on board the container was because the Mediterranean Shipping Company was very much under the gun and went for cover. Mr Gill was told after about eight weeks that his container was sitting safely in the middle of the ship shel- tered by the other containers on board. Because the brake press was over height it was in an open top container. So I knew it wouldn t be one of the ones toppling over in the pictures that came out, he says. Mr Gill s load was brought to dry land at the Port of Tau- ranga by Christmas Day. Christmas really did come for us this year, he says. We went down to Pier Six and there it was. They had four marine surveyors who checked the container for salt damage and the machine for rust but it was given the okay. I suppose we are one of the good luck stories to come out of the whole Rena disaster. Mrs Gill feels great empa- thy for the people who lost their personal possessions. It would feel so tragic to lose all your possessions. Things like the brake press can be replaced but you can t replace those sentimental items and memories. Track upgrade ahead of Avondale race days The stage is being set for the return of horse racing at the Avondale Jockey Club. The club s track is undergoing an upgrade and will be tested at a trial on April 3 ahead of the first official race meeting on April 25.Club secretary John Craig says the organisation is look- ing forward to returning to the track after a two-year break. The club suspended racing on July 3, 2010, in an attempt to clear a debt of nearly $1.6 million caused by an $8m loan in the 1980s to upgrade the venue. It has since made steady progress to sort the financial woes with cost-saving measures and the refinancing of a loan. We have applied for four race meetings this year and while New Zealand Tho- roughbred Racing has approved it all, it is just waiting to be confirmed by the Racing Board, he says. Mr Craig says there is need for a second gallops racecourse in Auckland to help take pressure off the main venue in Ellerslie. We believe Ellerslie will probably have to do annual maintenance in June through August, so Avondale would allow racing to con- tinue in Auckland. The first stage of the upgrade, improving the entire ring drain on the inside of the course, has been completed and the sec- ond stage, which includes sand slitting the entire course, is under way. Avondale Jockey Club chairman Ron Murphy says the upgrade will benefit the racing public, especially in the winter when many courses are being repaired. We re very pleased to be able to offer a top-class racing surface in the north- ern region that will ensure the Auckland racing public have ready access to races and that owners and trainers have easy access to a top class winter racing sur- face. The Avondale Cup and Avondale Guineas, two of the club s most famous races, will be held again at Ellers- lie on February 18.
