By MATTHEW GRAY No one will ever know for sure what drove Samuel Slutzkin towards his last desperate act. But his tragic and self-inflicted death may well have been prevented in a modern age if his case had come to the attention of the right people. The 19-year-old was admitted to Auckland Hospital in March 1905 after eating a quantity of rat poison. He survived and was sent home -- only to be charged by police for trying to take his own life. The grim prospect of a trial did little for his fragile mental state and Samuel decided to have another go. He swallowed a lethal amount of phosphorous paste -- another highly toxic substance used to tip matches and kill rodents. This time there was no need for medical care. Samuel was dead on March 10 -- just a week or so after his first failed attempt. An inquest was held and the coroner ruled that the deceased, an immigrant from Jerusalem, had committed suicide while mentally deranged''. Samuel wasn't the only person to take his own life that month. But he was younger than most. Statistics show suicides in New Zealand during the early years of the 20th century mostly involved men over 40 and included a good number well into their 60s. Many were pushed to the brink of despair by failed business ventures, broken relationships and age-related illness. Nearly 19 people per 100,000 were killing themselves every year by 1929 and men were four times more likely than women to be among them. Just some of the suicide casualties laid to rest around the same time as Samuel include: Joseph William Seymour, 59, Point Ahuriri; William Anderson, 64, Wellington; Samuel Goodwin, 59, Christchurch; Richard Stent, 50, Wellington; Norman McLeod, 31, Whanganui; David Buchanan, 27, Eden Terrace; John Sunckell, 51, Christchurch. Some died by hanging -- others by gunshot and a few used poison. All left relatives and friends asking the same question: Why? Samuel Slutzkin is buried in the Hebrew section of Waikumete Cemetery.
