It s the preliminary stage of a $270 million project which will see the existing 4.2km stretch of highway between Pt Chevalier and Te Atatu widened and raised. It follows a geotechni- cal investigation which discovered that the stretch of motorway, which was built in the 1960s, is slowly sinking. This causes surface flooding between the Great North Rd and Rosebank-Patiki Rd interchanges during high tides. The agency says the preliminary work, which will start next year, will see a a trial causeway built parallel to the existing motorway. This will allow it to measure the impact the project will have on the adjoining Motu Manawa- Pollen Island Marine Reserve. We will be working in a sensitive environment and building the tempor- ary causeway is import- ant for the overall suc- cess of the project, NZTA spokesman Tommy Parker says. The trial will ensure that we ve got the right approach and the right methodology in place. NZTA contractors will monitor plants and wildlife in the marine area to minimise the impact of the works. Work on the trial cause- way is expected to be completed in June. Construction of the new raised causeway is scheduled to start in early 2013, with com- pletion earmarked for 2017. The State Highway 16 project is part of the city s western ring route. Dream numbers come in for winner By MICHAEL FOX Auckland s newest millionaire says his win- ning Lotto numbers came to him in a dream. The Waitakere man won $6.1 million in Lotto Powerball last month after buying his ticket from a shop in St Lukes. A family spokesman for the man, who is a reg- ular Lotto player but changes his numbers occasionally, said the vision proved some dreams really do come true . About five or six weeks ago he dreamed of a set of Lotto numbers, so he changed his ticket to these new numbers. And what a result, the spokesman said. He called me on Sunday saying he thought he d won some- thing but he d not heard all the numbers, the spokesman said. I looked them up on the internet for him and read them out while he checked them off. He just kept saying yes, yes, yes and we realised he d got them all. It s pretty overwhelm- ing winning such a large sum of money. Right now he s just going to put it in the bank while he decides what he will be doing with it. The win still hadn t sunk in, the spokes- person said. The winner, who has opted to remain anonymous, gave the winning ticket to the family spokesperson for safe keeping. He hid it in a bedroom drawer until the family claimed the prize. -- aucklandnow.co.nz Kids go on stage Performing group Youn- gstarz is putting on a concert to showcase their talents on Friday. Director Mark Rutter says many of the group never had any acting or singing experience and have come a long way since the group was established in February. Youngstarz was set up to perform a musical Mr Rutter wrote called The Happy Prince, but a few of the main cast mem- bers time commitments meant they had to pull out and the show was called off. In order not to disap- point the remaining performers, Mr Rutter instead decided to put on a variety bash, featuring skits, song and dance items. Some of them started off very shy and slightly withdrawn but their involvement in Young- starz has enabled them to grow with such new levels of confidence, he says. The group plans to put on a production next year. The concert is on Friday at 7.30pm at the Rivers of Life Centre, Unit A/26 Aetna Place, Henderson. Tickets are $5. Call 836-7070 to book. Reservations are essential.
