Trust Bosch Car Service We simply know more about your car Commodore to stay in Australia - Holden Holden says its flagship Commodore will con- tinue to be designed and engineered in Australia, despite union claims to the contrary. Holden says no de- cisions have been made on the long-term future of its top selling Commo- dore and says it is too far out to speculate on union claims that the next model could be the last engineered in Australia. But the company re- fused to guarantee the long-term viability of the car that has topped the sales charts for 15 years. A report in The Aust- ralian Financial Review quotes a prominent union official from The Association of Profes- sional Engineers, Scientists and Managers Australia as saying GM Holden has canvassed not continuing to work on new model Commo- dores beyond 2014''. But Holden spokes- woman Emily Perry says the union report con- tained significant misin- formation' and that the company has not taken any decisions yet' regard- ing the future design, engineering and pro- duction of the Commo- dore. We're committed to designing, engineering and building cars in Australia,'' she says, and nothing has changed.'' Holden chairman and managing director Mike Devereux said on Mel- bourne radio station 3AW, Our plan is to build, design and engin- eer cars in this country'', and called for the reinstatement of a co- investment scheme simi- lar to the now defunct Green Car Innovation Fund that was shelved to help pay for the Queens- land flood clean-up this year. He said the union dis- cussions were private and indicated various scenarios were available, none of which had been decided yet. He also said, We're negotiating with our partners to make Aust- ralia as attractive a place to do these very high tech things [design- ing and engineering vehicles]. The outlook for jobs for manufacturing for Holden in Australia is extremely strong. We have two of the best sell- ing cars in the country: Commodore and Cruze.'' Holden has long been seen as an important design and engineering hub within General Motors. As well as designing and building one-off con- cept cars for inter- national motor shows, designers and engineers recently produced the iconic Chevrolet Camaro muscle car for North America. Mike Devereux said for the Australian automotive industry to be competitive globally it required significant gov- ernment investment. I want the govern- ment of this country ... to fully understand that you are competing against Germany, Brazil, Russia, India and China,'' he said. There isn't a place on the planet ... where you either don't have co- investment or tariffs. What I suggest is a solid co-investment pro- gramme. That is the way the game is played. If people find that distasteful, I can't control that; that is the way the global auto industry works.'' Devereux said funding for the automotive indus- try would make it extremely viable to do business here and to thrive''. However, Holden stopped short of confirming design and engineering jobs long term and where the next generation Commodore would be produced, with Devereux stating there were no guarantees in life or anything''. He continued, The bottom line is, Australia is one of only 13 places in the world where we get to design, engineer and build cars. My goal over the next year or so is to make sure that we secure that for a very long time.'' Sales of Australian- made cars have roughly halved over the past dec- ade and exports are under pressure with the high Australian dollar. US-based car makers Ford and General Motors are looking to consoli- date their global operations and produce cars for the world rather than individual markets. As part of the One Ford policy, the long- term future of the Ford Falcon is under a cloud. Ford is expected to announce next year what will happen with the Fal- con, with various scenarios still under- stood to be in play.
