Lucky students from west Auckland schools attended a young authors and illustrators workshop this month. The workshop was presented by children's author Craig Smith and illustrator Katz Cowley who together produced the book The Wonky Donkey. The budding writers and illustrators were selected from Wai- takere schools including Colwill, Rosebank, Lincoln Heights, Swanson, Matipo and Hobsonville. They travelled to Hay Park School in Mt Roskill. Colwill School deputy principal Paula Were says the workshop was a great opportunity for the children to improve their skills with the help of respected people in the publishing industry. They learnt illustration techniques and how to write more effectively. It was very motivational and Craig and Katz were highly enter- taining.'' Exercises included putting words to music, how to make your writing more interesting and learning how to give a character facial expressions and body features. The annual workshop is hosted by the Auckland Reading Association.
