Photo: JASON OXENHAM Dancers step up for youth By NICOLA MURPHY Black Grace's youth dance group is out to prove that not all teenagers are drunk and stupid -- one dance at a time. Urban Youth Move- ment is performing at Glen Eden's Playhouse Theatre as part of the Auckland Arts Festival. Who are You? features 12 young people aged 16 to 21, seven of whom are from west Auckland. Co-ordinator Neil Iere- mia says the perform- ance is all about showing who these young people really are. Youth get a lot of media attention which shows them binge drinking and boy-racing. I said to them how are you different'?'' Mr Ieremia says there is a perception that youth problems are linked to poverty. But people can be really wealthy and have problems too.'' The show's purpose is to give young people the opportunity through dance to voice their con- cerns, face their fears and express their hopes for their generation. Mr Ieremia describes the show as fast, ener- getic and at times humorous. Henderson resident Ashlea Williams, 18, says you have to be fit to take part. I've never sweated so much in my life,'' she says. Hard work aside, all four of the west Auck- land dancers interviewed by the Western Leader say they've had a blast rehearsing for the performances. It will be both Miss Williams and her team- mate Briana Chapman's first show with Urban Youth Movement and they are excited but ner- vous. Who are You? is at Musgrove Studio, Maidment Arts Centre on March 2, 4 and 5. Call 308-2383. The show will be at Glen Eden Playhouse Theatre from March 8 to 10 at 7.30pm. Call 361-1000.
