The census is the offic- ial count of how many people and dwellings there are in New Zea- land and will give Stat- istics NZ a snapshot of the people and the places where we live. The census is held every five years. Every- one including children, babies and visitors must fill in a blue individual form or have one filled in for them. You can fill in the forms online or use the paper forms delivered to your house. Census collectors will have yel- low name tags with their photo and signature. If you have any concerns about your collector, call the helpline toll-free on 0800 CENSUS (0800-236-787). These collectors will not ask to enter your home. Forms will be delivered up to March 8. Collectors will pick up completed forms between March 9-20. Keep kids sun safe Parents are being urged to make sure their chil- dren are well protected from the harsh sun this summer. Plunket says a few minutes of gentle'' sun- light early in the morn- ing or late in the day is good for children. But babies and toddlers can quickly burn in the sun because they have very delicate skin, national child safety adviser Sue Campbell says. Tips for protection: Make sure young chil- dren always wear hats with wide brims or caps with flaps that protect their face, neck and ears when they are outside Keep them protected with clothes that cover their arms, legs and bodies Limit their playtime in direct sunlight -- 11am to 4pm is the most dangerous time Use sunscreen on exposed parts of the body and reapply it regularly, especially after swim- ming Keep babies in the shade at all times See www.plunket.org. nz or www.cancernz.org. nz for more sunsafe tips.
