Grant a wish Kids entering this year s Weet-Bix Tryathlon are encouraged to raise money for those less for- tunate than themselves. Participants can fund- raise on behalf of Make- A-Wish New Zealand, an organisation which grants wishes to children with life-threatening illnesses. They simply need to secure sponsorship for completing the race. Sanitarium general manager Pierre van Heerden says the com- pany is happy to sup- port such a great cause. Every year we encourage kids to achieve their own per- sonal best but this year we are also prompting them to help make dreams come true for some very sick kids. Money collected will be used to grant wishes to children. The tryathlon is on at St Heliers on February 20. Go to www.tryathlon. weetbix.co.nz for more information. Go alcohol free People are being chal- lenged to give up alcohol during February to raise funds for school-based drug and alcohol inter- vention programme Amplify! Sponsorship is col- lected online to remain alcohol-free for the month. The programme is run by Odyssey House and uses youth-friendly techniques like song- writing, dance and text messaging. Chief executive Chris- tine Kalin says the pro- gramme has helped hun- dreds of at-risk students. See www.febfast.org.nz. Sales figures dip The holiday break was a factor in west Auckland house values dipping in January, the latest figures from Barfoot & Thompson show. The average sale price was $385,000, down four per cent on the average price for the past 12 months. Managing direc- tor Peter Thompson says a low level of new listings is holding back the market. The west Auckland suburbs with the greatest activity in Janu- ary were Henderson, Massey and Glen Eden.
