Asthma sufferers wanted for study A combined asthma inhaler with a chip that records how many times you take a puff is the key to a study taking place this year. Dr Rodney Marks of the Henderson Medical Centre is the only Auck- land practice involved in Asthma SMART study, run by the Medical Research Institute of New Zealand. He is look- ing for more asthma sufferers to take part. The study will look at the potential benefits of using a single combin- ation inhaler for main- tenance and relief, rather than multiple inhalers. They need to be using a steroid inhaler and have had an incident in the past 12 months where they have had to use Prednisone,'' Dr Marks says. They don't need to be regular patients of our clinic, but they will need to come and see us for the study once a month for five months. We will use special software to take the information from the chip in the inhaler to see how much they've used it. There will be two groups, one group will be using the combined inhaler as often as they need it, whereas the other group will be using their inhalers in the more conventional way.'' There will be no cost to participants and must be between 16 and 65 years. Call the clinic on 837-1110. IN BRIEF Give blood The Auckland Mobile Blood Collection Service will be at Henderson Trusts Stadium next week, on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. Donors can call in between 1pm and 7pm on Wednesday and Thursday and 9am and 2pm on Friday. First-time donors aged between 16 and 60 who are in good health are welcome. Sir John heads world cup team Supercity mayor Len Brown has announced a star-studded line-up as a draw card for this year's Rugby World Cup. The group, affection- ately known as Auck- land's 1st XV, includes former Silver Fern Bernice Mene, recording artist J Williams, broad- caster Kerre Woodham and fashion designer Trelise Cooper among other impressive names. The group will help Auckland prepare for the tournament via present- ations to business groups, writing news- letters and blogs, and making visits to schools and sports clubs. Members of the 1st XV will also engage the media and use their networks to spread the word. Auckland ambassador Sir John Walker has been chosen as the cap- tain of the team, which will also include Ruben Wiki, Julie Christie, Sir Wilson Whineray, Oscar Kightley, Michael Bar- nett, Grant Dalton, Simon Gault, John Hart, Carol Hirschfeld and Nigel Morrison. These people all realise how important Rugby World Cup 2011 is and that we all have a role to play in ensuring the tournament is a suc- cess for Auckland,'' he says. With Eden Park's redevelopment com- pleted and our transport and waterfront plans charging ahead, we know the bricks and mortar will be ready. The focus now is about ensuring Auck- landers will be ready to welcome the world,'' Mr Brown says. Rugby NZ 2011 chief executive Martin Sned- den says the 1st XV con- cept is a great initiative to spread the word that it's not all about rugby. Our mantra from day one has been around a stadium of four million,'' Mr Snedden says.
