Photo: NICOLA MURPHY By NICOLA MURPHY Exciting start: The Cluitts on their wedding day in 1951. It's not every day a blind date turns into a life-long love affair, but that's exactly what happened to Jack and Dale Cluitt. They were set up by a mutual friend and went to a dance hall in Queen St for their first date. The pair hit it off and dated for about a year before get- ting married on February 22, 1951. Sixty years later they are still going strong. The 82-year-old says the key to a successful marriage is working together. It's not telling each other what to do but helping each other out,'' Mrs Cluitt says. Young ones nowadays just fly off the handle and that's it. But talking is very import- ant.'' The couple says the highlights of the marriage have been the family holidays they spent together when their three daughters were young. Mr Cluitt, now 87, built two caravans which they kept at Martins Bay near Wark- worth. Mrs Cluitt says they've had their ups and downs includ- ing her husband having heart problems and cancer, but they have worked through them. After their retirement, Mrs Cluitt joined the Waitakere Ladies Probus and took up chocolate-making. Mr Cluitt enjoys spending time in his veggie garden. The couple has seven grandchildren and two great- grandchildren. They will be celebrating their wedding anniversary with a get-together with their family. IN BRIEF Big golf day The largest charity golf day in New Zealand is at the Titirangi Golf Course on February 11. The annual event is organised by the Rotary Club of Parnell. It's been running for seven years with all proceeds going to Alzheimers Auckland. The club and organiser Des Topp are hoping to beat last year's total of $150,000, taking the total pool over seven years to $750,000. ''The club acknowledges the tremendous work the Alzheimers Auckland care- giving team does in providing support for those with this debilitating illness, ensuring thatitisalessofaburdenon patients and families. We feel humbled in making a difference to the lives of so many,'' Mr Topp says. Rehearsal space The Playhouse Theatre in Glen Eden is looking for extra rehearsal space for its resident theatre company to prepare for upcoming productions. The group hopes someone can donate a space or offer it at a low cost. Anyone who can offer a large area, ideally with toilet facilities and a kitchenette, can contact Bob Jessopp on 833-7162. The theatre is a non-profit community organisation.
