By MATTHEW GRAY It should have been a night of fun with his mates. But John Edward Joseph Quigley's game of pool at the Carlton Club Hotel in Newmarket would be his last. John, a 21-year-old shoemaker, joined friends at the establish- ment on February 6, 1893. Everyone knew he'd been feel- ing poorly. But his presence that night suggested he was on the mend. The opposite proved to be true when John, a bachelor, collapsed in the billiards room and started convulsing. Someone sent for a doctor while shocked patrons watched in hor- ror. John died before help arrived. Death is not good for trade and John's sudden demise was the last thing pub proprietors needed after a shaky start to business six years earlier. The hotel was built at 489 Khy- ber Pass Rd in 1887 and initially ran into big problems when its original owner tried to get a license to sell liquor. Opposition seemed to be driven by rival brewers and members of the same temperance movement that mounted similar campaigns against other drinking estab- lishments throughout the city. Owner William Suiter, who served as the first mayor of Newmarket in 1885, fought back with some hard political lobbying. His efforts got him the license he needed but not in time to save him from financial ruin. The hotel was sold in April, 1888, shortly before William slipped into bankruptcy. Its troubles were all but forgot- ten by the time of John Quigley's untimely end. But the tragedy pushed it back into the public spotlight as news of the death spread. The Carlton Club was again the talk of the town. Any speculation over the cause of John's sudden departure was put to rest with the publication of post mortem results. Death, an inquest showed, was caused by heart failure resulting from congestion of the lungs. John was buried at Waikumete Cemetery on February 8, 1893.
