Voyage to celebrate 100 years By NICOLA MURPHY Around NZ: The team who are circumnavigating New Zealand in an inflatable rubber boat includes, from left: Jason Harvey, Matt Buswell, Antony Morgan, Ashley Matuschka, back-up driver Jason Glew, Andrew Lancaster and Blake Ingram. Photo: GEOFF DALE Six men. Forty days. Two inflatable rubber boats. It sounds like a reality TV series but it's actually a special voyage to celebrate Surf Life Saving New Zealand's centenary. Muriwai lifeguards Andrew Lancaster and Ash Matuschka got the idea of circumnavigating the country in an inflatable rescue boat after reading a book by adventurer Bear Grylls. It was such an epic adventure and we wanted to do something similar,'' Mr Lancaster says. The team consists of six lifeguards, five of whom are from Muriwai surf lifesaving club, who will take turns driving the two boats over the 40-day journey. A five-member support crew will accompany the men in a separate vessel. The team left from the Viaduct Harbour last week. It will be the first time a full cir- cumnavigation of New Zealand will be completed in a craft of less than 4 metres in length. The lifeguards are doing it to raise awareness of what Surf Life Saving New Zealand does. They started planning the trip around 18 months ago and more people jumped on board as the proj- ect grew. It was quite an onerous task,'' Mr Lancaster says. It sounded quite simple but there was actually a lot of planning that went into it. The drivers have been working out at the gym for the past four months to prepare their muscles. We've also been taking the boat out to practice,'' Mr Lancaster says. He says it's hard to predict exactly how the journey will go but there will be areas of water that are more difficult than others in the 5200km round trip. There are some notoriously dangerous stretches of water, such as the southwestern corner of the South Island and Foveaux Strait, from Stewart Island to Bluff,'' the 25-year-old says. But any stretch of water can be dangerous depending on the con- ditions.'' He expects there will be good days and bad days. It will be pretty hard work physically and mentally, especially towards the end.'' Surf Life Saving New Zealand president Bob Harvey says the trip will be dangerous and the con- ditions could be horrific at times. But we salute the boys and the expedition they're undertaking to celebrate 100 years of surf life- saving in New Zealand.'' EMAIL YOUR NEWS Contact us on edwl@snl.co.nz
