Photo: NICOLA MURPHY When Vickie Hough decided she wanted to join a club, the RSA wasn t her first choice. But when her former partner suggested they sign up to the New Lynn RSA as associate members she gave it a try. At the age of 27, Vickie was one of the youngest, but she didn t mind. Eighteen years later she is still a member and loves it. Vickie says she s made loads of friends, was a committee member for four years and competes in darts and pool with the club. As war veterans get older it s members like Vickie who play an important part in keep- ing the RSA going. There are 120,000 RSA members nation- wide, divided into three categories: returned, services and associate. Associate members are those who have not served in the armed forces or police but who identify with the organ- isation s ideals. RSAs around New Zealand have been actively recruiting new members. National president Don McIver has made boosting membership among younger people a priority. If the RSA is going to continue to be effective as an organisation we need to focus on those younger people who are returning from recent conflicts and who are veterans in their own right. He says this will not diminish the importance of older members to the club. Henderson RSA man- ager Rachel Burriss con- firms her club has started to encourage younger membership. We ve had a few members sign up lately, one as young as 13, who are accompanied by their parents. The associate mem- bers are an important part of it too, the service members are getting on a bit. We have a huge amount of respect for them and that will never change, she says. They re just not as willing to come out and dance at night like they used to. But she says despite changes in mem- bership, everything the RSA stands for will stay the same. We will always be about people helping people, Ms Burriss says. But attracting new members isn t easy. Ms Burriss says they have had some success with organising sports events and bringing in different bands to play. New Lynn RSA man- ager Terry Wood says the club has also just spent $900,000 modern- ising its premises.
