The station was officially opened on September 24. Photo: STEPHEN FORBES SEPTEMBER THE YEAR THAT WAS On August 17, the West- ern Leader ran a front page story with the headline: Wanted. It fea- tured the mugshots of several people the police were interested in ques- tioning who they had not been able to track down. Several of those pictured turned themselves in as a result. The Falls restaurant owner Alan Parry was shocked when his father Dave turned up to visit him at work in Hender- son in September, having just sailed through a massive storm off the coast of New Zea- land. Dave was on the final leg of a journey from Hawaii when he sailed into the wicked weather between Tonga and Auckland. The 62-year-old said his boat suffered little damage apart from the auto-helm being broken, meaning he had to steer manually all the way to Westgate Marina. Also in September, Waitakere City Council added the late Maurice Shadbolt's home in Arapito Rd, Titirangi, to its list of heritage properties, with plans to turn it into a writer's residence.
