Real estate market is still subdued By NICOLA MURPHY Property owners be warned: The downturn in the real estate market is not over yet. New Zealand Institute of Economic Research principal economist Shamubeel Eaqub says the market is still very subdued and is not expected to pick up until the second half of next year. Real Estate Institute of New Zealand figures show there were 5138 homes sold nationally in November, significantly down on the almost 7837 homes sold when the market was at its peak in 2007. In the Waitakere area, 216 homes were sold in November with a median price of $380,000. In November 2007 there were 317 sold with a median price of $384,000. It s pretty dismal, Mr Eaqub says. People are just waiting for more certainty. He says greater debt, job insecurity and high interest rates are slowing sales. But west Auckland real estate agents say they have had positive sales results recently. Harveys Blockhouse Bay managing director Len Day says his office has seen an uplift in volumes since Novem- ber. We ve had a number of auctions lately for houses which have sold well over their reserve. People are still cau- tious and worried -- it takes people a while to believe now is a good time to do something. Glen Wells from Ray White Royal Heights/ Massey has seen an increase in sales over the past four months. He says first home buyers in particular are starting to become more active. The number of forced sales is less than what it was before, he says. Crown Lynn gatepost back Brickworks: Councillor Sandra Coney, Whau Local Board chairman Derek Battersby and West Auckland Historical Society president Trevor Pollard with the historic gatepost at the old Crown Lynn site. By CATHERINE HEALY An historic gatepost unearthed by railway workers has been reinstated with a plaque describing its link to New Lynn s pottery history. Local historian Trevor Pol- lard noticed an old gate post sticking out of the ground out- side the Les Mills gym in New Lynn in 2006. Last year work was carried out on the rail tracks at New Lynn and workers dug the post up. Mr Pollard, president of the West Auckland Historical Society, realised it must have been the gatepost of the NZ Brick Tile and Pottery Co, from which Crown Lynn crockery was formed. Mr Pollard was an apprentice at Crown Lynn in the 1950s and thought the post should be res- cued. Reinstating the post along with a plaque explaining its his- tory was was one of the last projects approved by the old New Lynn Community Board and it has just been completed. Trevor Pollard would like to organise a get-together of people who were involved with the brickworks. Contact him on 817-8822.
