Drinking and driving often starts with an excuse, as drinking drivers try to find a way to justify what is seen by most people as socially unacceptable behaviour. The campaign will highlight the fact that there is no excuse and that drivers need to accept responsibility for their actions. Soft drink deal Ever innovative, Coca- Cola in Britain is to help reward designated drivers in thousands of pubs across the country as part of a Christmas drink drive campaign. In addition to running radio advertising, posters in pub toilets and online search activity, the Coca- Cola Designated Driver campaign offers drivers free soft drinks in more than 8000 participating venues across Britain. Not a bad idea at all. Honda tops satisfaction poll Honda ranks best in vehicle ownership satisfaction according to the just released AA JD Power Asia Pacific 2010 New Zealand Vehicle Ownership Study. Based on owner experiences in four factors: Vehicle quality and reliability; vehicle appeal (which measures satisfaction with the vehicle's design, style, performance and comfort); ownership costs; and service satisfaction, Honda scored 772 out of 1000 points, head of Volkswagen on 768, Mazda 762, Kia 753 and Mitsubishi 753. The industry average score was 752, a score also posted by Toyota. Frugal Yaris promised Toyota says the Japanese-specification version of its new Yaris model will offer an ultra high efficient 1.3-litre version with start-stop technology that will have the brands highest fuel economy rating, even ahead of its Prius hybrid. Some time after the car's initial December 22 release, both hybrid and electric versions will be revealed, with the petrol- electric model being prepared for production in France for the European Market. Fun stuff 'is what men do' Snow men: From left: Big Buddy chief executive Richard Aston, Bradley and big buddy Jason Durey. Summer snow: Pupils at Henderson North Primary play in the foam snow. By VANITA PRASAD Six schools in west Auck- land were hit by snow flurries on Tuesday despite the high tem- perature and humidity. The last time it snowed in Waitakere was in July 1939 when a freak weather pattern hit the country. This week's foam snow was brought in by special effects maestro and Big Buddy mentor Jason Durey. He is one of hundreds of men volunteering their time to mentor fatherless boys for the Big Buddy charitable trust. He brought the snow machine to the schools to spread Christmas cheer. It's a bit of joy for kids at Christmas who might otherwise have nothing to look forward to at this time of year. A lot of these kids will never have seen snow before,'' he says. I've had a lot of kids come up to me asking if the snow is real.'' One of the schools he visited was Henderson North Primary where his little buddy Bradley is in year 6. Mr Durey has been Bradley's mentor for three years. Bradley says having Jason as a big buddy is fun. My favourite trip was going to the Skytower.'' Mr Durey says he and Bradley spend about five hours together every week. We go to my work- shop and weld things, we take walks up Rangitoto, we even go to Snow Pla- net.'' He says their relation- ship is really rewarding. It's a fantastic experi- ence and it's made a dif- ference with him,'' he says. I'd recommend it to anyguy--yougetalot back from it.'' Since its inception Big Buddy has matched 350 boys with male mentors. Chief executive Rich- ard Aston says the snow day is an example of how men are good at knowing how to have fun. It's what men do -- they do fun stuff and kids love it.'' Nationwide there are 180 boys in the pro- gramme.
