Ratepayers face 4.9 percent hike Noelene Raffills Len Brown By STEPHEN FORBES Aucklanders are facing a rates rise of up to 4.9 percent in 2011/2012 under the super-city. Mayor Len Brown mustered support to pass the proposed increase on Monday despite oppo- sition from the Citizens and Rate- payers ticket which was calling for a target of 3.9 percent. The council s strategy and finance committee was split 10 to 8 in its vote in favour of the mayor s planned maximum rates rise. This year Waitakere residents received a 3.8 percent rise in coun- cil controlled costs and 1.5 percent increase in regional levies. The Auckland Council s next meeting to discuss its 2011/2012 budget will be in February next year. Mr Brown says the 4.9 percent figure is a maximum rise and he is keen to make whatever cost savings he can to reduce rates bills for Aucklanders. We have already identified millions of dollars in savings and will be looking for more efficiencies, Mr Brown says. This increase represents a responsible and sustainable rating level given amalgamation and extra unbudgeted costs. But he says unfortunately the council is facing high costs includ- ing next year s Rugby World Cup, which is will add 2 percent to rates alone. And Mr Brown says the cost of amalgamating Auckland s local authorities is another added over- head which he says will be felt for the next 30 years. Whau ward councillor Noelene Raffills voted against the mayor s proposal. Mrs Raffills and the other Citizens and Ratepayers council- lors instead wanted a rise of 3.9 percent. The mayor was very disap- pointed because he wanted every- one to agree, she says. But I thought if you start at 4.9 per cent who knows where you will end up. I would rather be as close as possible to 3.9 percent. But she says there are a lot of costs associated with the amalga- mation of Auckland s councils that have yet to be added up. Meeting discusses rate rises Commercial property owners are meeting today to discuss the council's planned rates increase. Jim Turnbull helped organise the meeting in Henderson. He says the rates for his commercial property have increased from just over $20,000 in 2006-2007 to almost $29,000 this year. ''But the valuation of my property in that time has only gone up once,'' he says. Mr Turnbull says other property owners share his opposition to another increase. ''There's a lot of dissent about the rates we pay.'' He has invited representatives from Auckland Council to attend.
