Photo: NICOLA MURPHY Few people know about it but hidden away in New Lynn is a four-and-a-half acre garden filled with butterflies, flowers and a very friendly cat named Zeus. The West Lynn Garden is run by volunteers who keep it in order. The four-and-a-half acre area is an ideal place to while away lazy afternoons this summer. Volunteer Pam Bailey says children are welcome to come and play while parents sit and relax with a picnic. Not many people know about it, she says. The West Lynn Garden Com- mittee has also recently pur- chased some signs to identify native trees in the grounds. A lot of people ask us what all of the trees are and some- times we don t know, Ms Bai- ley says. The group hopes to put them up in the next few weeks. The monarch butterflies have hatched and are starting to emerge and will be around for the summer. There s even a weta hotel to check out. The West Lynn Garden is open every day of the year from 10am to 4pm, including Christmas Day. Ms Bailey says families are welcome to drop by to have their Christmas lunch there. Entry is $2 at an honesty box at the gate. Phone 827-7045 for more information. Jewellery and silk demos Artist Shelene Spoek will be giving a demon- stration on how to paint on silk at the Arataki Visitors Centre this Sunday. The free event starts at 11am. The Cornwallis resi- dent produces pieces that can either be worn or used as decorative wall-hangings. Kimberly Roman will demonstrate how to make your own jewel- lery from 1pm onwards. The workshop is part of a new series of activities over the sum- mer at the visitors cen- tre, 300 Scenic Drive, Oratia.
