Book magic: Mrs Claus reads a story to Max Lang, 5. Ho ho: Santa sits in his sleigh ready to hear what children want for Christmas. Photos: NICOLA MURPHY Thick blankets of snow, graceful reindeer and a baby nestled in a manger. It s a Christmas wonder- land that will really impress the kids -- and it s in Hender- son. Instead of putting on a show, Waitemata Theatre members spent every night for a month converting the Cellar Theatre into Mrs Claus cottage, Santa s work- shop and a nativity scene. Linda Earl is one of the organisers and says this is the third time the club has put on the walk-through exhibit. We do it because we love Christmas, she says. Waitemata Theatre presi- dent Carolyn Gibson got the idea after spending Christmas in Canada, where decorating for the festive season is a big deal. Mrs Earl says it s been a lot of hard work to get the won- derland ready. But everything just falls into place, it s beautiful, she says. Children will get to tell Santa what they want for Christmas, meet Mrs Claus, talk a walk through Santa s mailroom and a snowy won- derland. There is also a life- size nativity scene with audio that teaches them the Christmas story. Christmas Wonderland runs every night in the Cellar Theatre at Corban Estate Art Centre until December 24. Entry is $2.50 and it is open from 6.45pm to 9.30pm. Go to www.western leader.co.nz to take a walk through the wonderland with five-year- old Max Lang.
