Audi regards its new A1 hatch as a condensed and undiluted rendering of the company s auto- motive DNA. Whatever that means. Anyway, potential buyers will also see that theA1isacartobe listed in the premium small car segment created by the Mini Coo- per, a band wagon already leapt upon by the Fiat 500, Alfa Mito and Citroen DS3. But there does appear to be a bit more to the A1 than being merely a trend fol- lower. For one thing it doesn t play on being a post-modern rendering of a past classic. It s simply a small Audi, and to my mind it s all the better for it, coming as it does with all the same detailing, styling cues and material choices associated with its much larger, more expensive siblings. That s not to say it doesn t cut a head- turning dash in traffic like those other cars, which is quite an achievement when your base asking price is $38,300. For that you still get alloy rims, a delightfully finished cabin -- albeit a pretty conservative one -- and a truly remarkable power unit: a 1.4-litre TSi four that churns out an addictively elastic 90kw, and drives through six slick-shifting manual ratios. Even slicker, for another $3000, is a seven-speed two-pedal S-tronic seven-speed transmission, which slots through its ratios with creamy precision and suits the power unit beautifully. The car is surpisingly brisk when equipped with this trans- mission and almost turbine-smooth. A pop-up information screen for the Audi s MMI -- Multi Media Interface -- features in the centre of the dash, and it s easy to fathom how to connect, down- load and link with your phone, MP3 player or iPod, though Sat-nav is not here yet. There will effectively be three specification levels for the A1, but whatever trim you buy yours with, it will be a good drive. The standard S-tronic car I spent most of my time with at its launch found itself soak- ing up bumps and holes on our drive route with quiet decorum. The electro-hydraulic steering had plenty of heft and feel while the Audi cornered flat and in control over some wick- edly cambered roads. For $3000 more than the starter car, the Sport offers 16 inch alloy wheels instead of 15 inch items, slightly firmer suspension and gains seats with more lateral support to cope with the more sporting chassis higher cornering forces and leather for the wheelrim and shifter. Above the Sport there will eventually be an S-line A1 which will go firmer still in the chassis, and offer even sharper wheels and still more dress-up opport- unities. All told it will be entirely possible to option your A1 right up to the $60,000 bracket and beyond, but if you can only afford the base car for the time being, you won t feel short- changed at all. The A1 is irrefutably a small car, and will prob- ably not figure in a familiy s single car buy- ing plans, as even sliding a teen in behind an average-sized driver will be a feat of some nego- tiation. However, once they re in, rear occu- pants will find nicely- shaped seating. The luggage area is small but the rear seats do have a split-fold fea- ture to make more load space, if required. Over all the A1 feels more solid and refined than the others in its segment, with a big car feel that belies its sub-4 metre compactness. Per- haps that s the conde- nsed DNA bit that Audi was talking about.
