The Health Min- istry has announced $24 million over four years for the pilot programme, which will be run by Waitemata District Health Board. Waitemata was chosen because of its strong focus on screening and its commitment to working closely with primary care to ensure as many people as possible participate in the pilot, Health Min- ister Tony Ryall says. He says local GPs will play a leading role in informing their patients about the programme and encouraging them to take part. About 130,000 people aged from 50 to 74 who live in the DHB area will be invited to partici- pate. They will be sent a screening test kit in the mail, which they can complete at home and mail to a selected labo- ratory for assess- ment. Fundraiser for Canterbury There will be a fundraiser for the Can- terbury Earthquake Appeal at Te Atatu Pen- insula Community Cen- tre tomorrow from 1pm until late. The event features performances from community groups, a live auction, a garage sale and face painting. The fundraiser is organised by Renacer in Auckland. The Red Cross will collect donations on the door. Phone 833-1242 for more information. Face painter: Erin Harrison provides youngsters with colourful facial adornments. Getting comfy: Beach Rd was partially closed for the event, so there was plenty of room for families to take a seat. Back seat ride: Youngsters were happy to take up the offer of free rides in a hot rod. Fun and laughter at hospice event By CATHERINE HEALY Around 1000 people attended Hospice West Auckland s annual remembrance event on Sunday evening. Known as Light Up Hospice, the event sees Hospice House in Te Atatu Peninsula festooned with fairy lights. Locals are invited to come along and remember the loved ones who won t be with them this Christmas. The event was sponsored by local businesses and everyone involved volunteered their time. There were hot rod and Harley-Davidson rides, a parachuting display, local performers and carol singing. Hospice West Auckland chief executive Barbara Wil- liams says the event gives back to local people who sup- port the organisation through- out the year.
