With the advent of local authority trading enterprises and public private partnerships, a significant potential has since arisen for a blurring of boundaries, to the point where acquisition for work with a public component may simultaneously secure unique commercial advantage to a council and to its private partners. Whether the Act intended compulsory acquisition for commercial advantage is now being tested at law. This is the real import of the case at New Lynn (Barber waits for verdict, Western Leader, November 25) presently before the Environment Court. Roger Evans Ranui Candidate I was astounded at the Western Leader report of November 25 that Chris Carter would consider running as an independent against any Labour candidate other than Phil Tywford, which coincided with the withdrawal by Greg Presland. I call on Phil Tywford, asIamsureheisan honourable fellow, to publicly repudiate such comments. Otherwise it throws the whole selection process into the spectre of backroom deals to avoid possible defeat at the hands of an expected strong National candidate to replace Henare. Labour can stand on its own record in opposition with a good local candidate -- no matter whom National chooses -- who can make a successful transition beyond the present situation. Michael Kidd Ranui Unique plants Contrary to Nicky Foster's claim that road planting with native plants is uninspiring'' (Western Leader, November 25), I would like to especially congratulate the landscape designers responsible for the recent New Lynn redevelop- ment for their ability to provide a strong sense of local identity along with a strong architectural quality to the planting. By contrast, much of our private planting interventions, especially in the west, reflect a weedy cosmopolitan flora that undermines the unique visual qualities of the New Zealand landscape. New Zealand vegetation is truly unique in the world and it is important to our very identity. It is also important to the relationship we have with the land we live in. Public planting should increasingly celebrate our special natural heritage. Dr Len Gillman Head of School of Applied Sciences AUT University Mine families My heart goes out to the families in Greymouth who have lost loved ones in the mine. Nothing will bring back those who have been lost but can I urge readers to give financial support to any appeal which is managed by one of our banks to assist the families because they will need help in the future for various expenses and costs, such as education for the children who have lost a father.
