22 WESTERN LEADER, NOVEMBER 30, 2010 ADVERTISEMENT Health Matters WHY MEN NEED TO BE MORE PROACTIVE ABOUT THEIR OWN HEALTH New Zealand men in general have poorer health and use health services less than women. They also have a lower life expectancy and are more likely to die from avoidable deaths than women. In New Zealand 10% fewer men go to a GP than women and on average there is a four year gap in life expectancy for all men and women, with a larger gap for Maori and Pacific Island. Smoking, too much alcohol, fast foods, lack of exercise, inability to cope with relationship difficulties, reluctance to ask for help when needed can all contribute to poor health and an increased risk of illness. More men are more likely to work full time than women and they may feel less able to take time off work to go to the doctor for routine check ups. Men are more than twice as likely as women to be at risk of cardiovascular disease, with their cardiovascular risk starting from the age of 35 compared with 45 for women. The figures for Maori and Pacific Island men are even bleaker with cardiovascular risks starting ten years earlier. More New Zealand men die from cancer than women, with lung cancer, caused mainly by smoking, the leading cause of male cancer deaths. Bowel (colorectal) cancer and prostate cancer are the second and third causes of cancer deaths. However, prostate cancer is the leading cancer for men with 3,000 men diagnosed annually. Men dominate our suicide statistics. However, things are changing. Worldwide there is now a greater focus on men's health, with more research being under taken. The life expectancy gap is slowly closing. HealthWEST PHO is keen to see men to be more active in taking charge of their own health because regular check- ups and lifestyle changes -- healthy eating and exercise -- will significantly improve their chances of living longer. Its year long Men's Health pilot ends today. The pilot offered a free health check for up to a thousand men between the ages of 35 and 70 who had not had a comprehensive health check up in the past 5 years. The programme was funded jointly by the Ministry of Health and the Free Masons. The checks included: • Cardiovascular Risk Assessment • Diabetes Risk Assessment • Lifestyle Assessment • Cancer Screening (for skin, lung, bowel and prostate cancers). While the final figures still have to be compiled, at the end of September the pilot showed that over a 100 of the participants to date had a risk of cardiovascular disease. The diabetes checks showed 15 new cases of diabetes and many more men were in a pre-diabetes stage requiring future review. Forty referrals for some form of cancer were also made. While the pilot has still to be fully analysed, as a result of what has been learned so far HealthWEST PHO urges men to invest more in maintaining their health through regular check-ups with their GP. Men not yet enrolled with a practice should do so. Early diagnosis for diabetes, cancer and cardiovascular disease significantly improves survival rates and together with lifestyle changes will allow them to have a longer and healthier life in which to enjoy their family/whanau.
