Cemetery needs information ' We've been revisiting all the graves making sure we can get all the information for the police so they can continue with their investigation. ' Cemetery manager Daniel Sales By STEPHEN FORBES The Waikumete Cem- etery wants to hear from anyone who thinks their loved one s grave may have been damaged in the recent spate of van- dalism. A group of young people entered the cem- etery overnight on November 20 and smashed 87 headstones in the A-F Anglican sec- tion. Cemetery manager Daniel Sales says the vandals left more than $300,000 worth of dam- age. He says iron railings used to adorn old graves were used to smash the headstones, some of which are very intricate and likely to be beyond repair. We ve asked that people contact us and give us any information they have on their loved ones that are buried in that area, Mr Sales says. Then we can cross reference it and contact them. But at this stage it s quite difficult because of the sheer age of many of the graves. He says with many graves dating back to the early 20th century it s not an easy task. Obviously there s a lot of people out there who want to find out if it s their relatives, Mr Sales says. So we re trying to col- lect all the information we can. We ve been revisiting all the graves making sure we can get all the information for the police so they can continue with their investigation. Mr Sales says while the cemetery has been the target of vandalism before it has never faced an attack on this scale. He s keen to find a way to help pay for the repair of the graves and is plan- ning to meet with vari- ous community groups to discuss options. Call the Waikumete Cemetery on 818-5615 if you believe a relative s grave has been vandalised. Police are continuing their investigation into the vandalism. People with information can call the anonymous Crimes- toppers number 0800- 555-111.
