The New Zealand Transport Agency announced last week that it had shortlisted two competitors to con- struct the Waterview Connection. The Fletcher Con- struction Co Ltd and Leighton Contractors Pty Ltd are the final two companies being con- sidered for the contract after Baulderstone Pty Ltd missed out on selec- tion. NZTA Auckland direc- tor Stephen Town says the announcements are a major milestone. We have been incred- ibly impressed with the calibre of all the submissions we have received on this project. The agency is running the tender process with its application for design and resource consents through the new national consenting pro- cess. Mr Town says this could save up to a year in the construction process. The application is cur- rently before a board of inquiry that will hear all submissions on the proj- ect before the final out- come is known in July next year. The Waterview Con- nection links the two motorways at the Great North Rd Interchange and includes the largest ever road tunnels in New Zealand for 2.5km of the route. Mr Town says the com- pleted project will deliver many benefits for the country and create around 1000 jobs. A completed western ring route will provide a strategic alternative to State Highway 1 and will reduce dependency on the Auckland Harbour Bridge, he says. It will provide better connections between the west and south of Auck- land and will signifi- cantly ease congestion and improve trip reliability for both freight and people. The western ring route involves extending SH20 to connect with SH16 at the Great North Rd Interchange as well as capacity improvements along SH16 from St Lukes to Westgate. The route should be operational by 2016.
