Photo: VANITA PRASAD Baker rises to occasion By VANITA PRASAD The thought of baking cupcakes next Tuesday is starting to make Jaimee Harris nervous. In a week s time the 15-year-old Avondale College student will be competing against the best young bakers in Auckland for the title of Chelsea School Bake Off Supreme Winner. Along with the title the winner of the compe- tition will receive $500 worth of cooking equip- ment and their school will be awarded equip- ment for their Food Technology department to the value of $1000. The students will be judged on a range of cri- teria including skill, creativity and decor- ation. A dark chocolate and boysenberry mud cake saw Jaimee surge for- ward to represent west Auckland in the five con- tender final of the baking competition. She s planning to cre- ate an Alice in Wonder- land themed adaptation of vanilla cupcakes for the final. I think I might do something with lavender or rose water. The Glen Eden resi- dent says she won t have much time to create and decorate her themed cupcakes. I m really nervous about only having an hour an a half. Jaimee says creating small fondant models for her entry will be the toughest part. In preparation Jaimee has been baking every night this week, some- thing her family is fond of. They really like having my cupcakes to eat every night. A self-confessed sweet tooth Jaimee says she has always enjoyed bak- ing and she d like to pur- sue a career in it. I want to go to culi- nary school and do more baking and cake decorating.
