Photo: TUREI MACKEY By TUREI MACKEY Playing around on a trampoline has led Dylan Grant to become a cham- pion cheerleader. The Whenuapai teen- ager helped his team win at the All Star Cheer- leaders International event on the North Shore this month. Dylan also claimed individual awards for best jumps overall and combination tumble pass with team-mate Came- ron Ramsay-Gibbons. The 14-year-old got into the sport after a family member noticed his aerial skills on a backyard trampoline. About two years ago my cousin was doing cheerleading on the North Shore and she said her group needed someone who could do different flips, something I have been doing for a while now,'' he says. Grant has an assort- ment of moves from backflips to running and standing tumbles. He hones his craft on the trampoline before going to team practice and training until 11pm some nights. The sport is based on teamwork and confidence -- especially when lifting or throwing someone. It is a trust thing -- the person underneath them has to be ready to catch them when they come down.'' Coach Kimberly Ram- say says the Massey High School student has been a valuable asset. Dylan is an extremely hard worker who has natural talents,'' she says. See Dylan showcase his skills at www.west ernleader.co.nz.
