Type 1 diabetics have to inject insulin to survive. It is usually diagnosed in childhood. Type 2 diabetes is much more common, affecting more than 200,000 New Zealanders. It usually occurs in later life and is a build- up of glucose in the blood, either because the pancreas has become sluggish or the body does not recognise that insulin is present. Sweet taste of freedom Healthy life: Type 1 diabetic Bev Grinter is a happier, healthier person since doing a DAFNE course and learning a different way of managing her insulin. By CATHERINE HEALY When Bev Grinter was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at the age of 12, there was very little information about suit- able nutrition. When we left the hos- pital, mum asked what to feed me and was told she could give me any- thing without sugar.'' Thirty-five years later, Bev finally got the full story after taking part in a five-day DAFNE course (Dose Adjustment for Normal Eating). The course challenges tra- ditional thinking about type 1 diabetes. Instead of injecting a regular amount of insu- lin, patients learn from diabetes nurses and dieticians how to calcu- late the carbohydrate content of their food and adjust their insulin accordingly. They learn how to apply DAFNE to eating out, travelling, exercising and what to do when they're ill. The result, says Bev, is freedom. It changed my life. I was getting tired of the constant battle. My tests would swing high and low for no reason. Now I have so much more con- trol.'' Bev says having low blood glucose, hypog- lycaemia or a hypo'', is a horrible, out-of-control feeling that used to send her to the pantry, des- perately eating whatever she could to get her blood glucose up. I used to get woken up in the middle of the night with a hypo. Those have pretty much gone.'' DAFNE taught Bev some simple tricks, such as carrying a small box of Just Juice around withher--afastwayto get her blood glucose up. The course is widely used overseas but Waite- mata is the only District Health Board in the country offering the course. Gemma Stott, team leader at the Diabetes Centre at North Shore hospital, says west Auck- land type 1 diabetics can ask their GP to refer them for a DAFNE course at Waitakere. Since it began in May 2008, more than 180 people have been through the course. Some diabetics were told 40 years ago that they couldn't eat cake. Now they can take part in a birthday party and have a slice,'' Gemma says. They're in control of their diabetes, rather than it controlling them.'' Diabetes Awareness Week is November 16 to 22.
