Helping out with financial advice By NICOLA MURPHY Christmas brings the ex- citement of celebrations and presents but it can also be difficult on family finances. CARE Waitakere Bud- geting Services advises people on ways to control their spending over the Christmas and New Year period. Their busiest time is usually from February to April after the festive season has wound down, children are back to school and parents are left with little or no money. People realise they've got debts to pay and that's when they come to us,'' director Ray Tuala says. He says in the current financial climate it's more important than ever to tighten the purse strings. One of the ways to do this is to look at making presents rather than buying them. A gift idea like secret santa helps. Buy a pres- ent for one person rather than for everyone.'' CARE Waitakere runs a variety of social ser- vices including free counselling and budget- ing advice. Call 834-6480 for information. BUDGETING TIPS Pay your essential bills like rent, power, phone, car registration before buying gifts and food for Christmas. Stick to your budget. Remember there will be big expenses coming up in January, like school costs and the long weekend holidays. Buy gifts sooner rather than later. Last- minute shopping sprees lead to spending over your budget. Don't borrow money to get through the festive season and don't buy gifts on hire purchase. Be creative and consider making your gifts. Home-baked Christmas cookies will go down a treat.
