The Nissan Micra is to be launch in New Zea- land later this month, with a simpler look, more room and a single engine/transmission choice. The new car aims to build on the success points of its predecessor by delivering more con- servative but irrefutably better looks along with a spacious and fashionable interior with the kind of safety elements and home comfort features expected these days. Due to the light take- up of the previous man- ual model, the new car will have a 1.5-litre 75kW 16v DOHC fuel- injected petrol engine. The Micra comes stan- dard with Vehicle Dynamic Control, Anti- Lock Brakes with Elec- tronic Brake Force Dis- tribution and Brake Assist, as well as dual front, front side and cur- tain airbags on both models. Three-point seatbelts are featured for all five seats, with the front seatbelts featuring pretensioners. Standard fitments are a Multi- drive computer and air conditioning, a unique digital anniversary reminder, remote entry, CD player, auxiliary input jack and steering wheel-mounted controls for the audio system. The range-topping Ti model adds Nissan Intel- ligent Key and push but- ton start/stop, climate control, 15-inch alloy wheels, and front fog lights. If the Micra's front passenger seat is unoccu- pied, the rear section of the seat squab can be flipped forward, provid- ing a secure well in which a bag or other small items may be stowed, to stop them rolling around under braking or cornering. From a design perspec- tive, the all-new Nissan Micra has been aerody- namically honed to reduce the coefficient of drag to a low 0.32, thanks in part to an opti- mised roofline. Lowering its centre of gravity and pushing the wheels to the extremities give the car a bolder stance and greater stab- ility. Weight saving has been a focus of the design team, which devised a unique lightweight, highly rigid roof panel that includes boome- rang-shaped grooves to reduce the transmission of noise and vibration into the cabin. The Micra for the New Zealand market is pro- duced in Thailand, alongside vehicles for the Japanese and Australian markets. Launching with two specification grades and high levels of equipment, Micras appeal will cover a broader section of the light car market, increasing its competit- iveness against the class leaders. Pricing will be announced later in the year.
