I was knocked unconscious, my airway obstructed, and might have died without the intervention of the people who came to my aid. I only know the name of one of them -- Miles Glew -- who also took my bike to his home. I can remember nothing of the event and for about half-an-hour afterwards. What I know is that I was taken to Waitakere Hospital emergency department by St John Ambulance, and I was treated with the utmost professionalism and kindness by all concerned. Many, many thanks to everyone from me and my family. Ken Taylor Te Atatu Peninsula Thanks for money The Lions Clubs of Blockhouse Bay-Lynfield in association with New Lynn Lions would like to express appreciation to the Western Leader, the public and LynnMall management who made the collection of old money possible with provision of a good site. The two days, October 16 and 17 were a success, resulting with over eight large Resene tins being filled with old coins and notes. Possibly up to $2000 when assessed. All this money will be honoured by the Reserve Bank for the Lions Clubs and go to ensure many youth projects will be fulfilled -- the youth of today are the future of New Zealand and this will help their development. And the children are helping also, young Bonnie motivated her classmates at Tiremoana School to join in the project, mums and dads co-operated. If anyone missed the LynnMall stand they still can phone Lions organiser Ray on 626-2342 to arrange collection. Alan Gray Blockhouse Bay-Lynfield Lions Club 'Carpetbagger' The claim by Wayne Davis (Western Leader, October 26) that I labelled Tim Shadbolt a carpetbagger is a figment of his imagination. I seem to recall that Shadbolt gave himself that appellation when, before an election some years ago, he declared his intention of seeking election anywhere in New Zealand by declaring: I don t care where, as long as I am mayor . While some of his erstwhile supporters may have condoned Shadbolt s past antics as a local mayor, the fact that he was prepared to go anywhere provided he had the top municipal job surely labels him a political itinerant.
