Recently released figures for the September quarter show there are still 4045 people claiming the dole in west Auckland, down from 4133 at the end of June. Nationwide the rate of unemploy- ment fell from 6.8 percent, 159,000, to 6.4 percent, 150,000, during the same period. National MP Kate Wilkinson says the latest figures are a good sign. The economy has now grown for five consecutive quarters and that is starting to result in more businesses hiring new staff. However, there is clearly more work to do and the government is com- mitted to maintaining its relentless focus on jobs.'' But New Zealand Council of Trade Unions secretary and economist Peter Conway says the government needs to do more to stimulate the economy. He says the government has to be more proactive by putting money into building new state houses, home insu- lation programmes or training. It is hard and I'm not going to throw pot-shots at the government. But when unemployment was just over 5 percent the government held a jobs summit, but now it's 6.4 percent we're not hearing much. We know that the labour market lags in any recovery. The problem is we don't even know if there is a recovery, let alone how long the lag will be in terms of jobs,'' he says. Before the full impact of the recession was felt in New Zealand, the rate of unemployment was 4.2 percent with 94,000 ime, ployed in September 2008. In September 2008 the rate of unem- ployment was 4.2 percent, with 94,000 people unemployed. What do you think? Send your letters to firstname.lastname@example.org and have your say.
