Photo: NICOLA MURPHY By NICOLA MURPHY Winning first place at the Waitakere Trust Art Awards came completely out of the blue for self- taught artist John Andrews. He says he s even a little bit embarrassed because the calibre of work was so high. I was so shocked, he says. It s been a bit of a buzz. There s some abso- lutely fantastic stuff here, he says. Mr Andrews won with his oil on canvas paint- ing Tamaki Magma, which depicts an aerial view of Auckland s isth- mus, the date of which is open to the viewer s interpretation. It could be set either way back in time, or way forward in time, he says. The Te Henga -- Beth- ells Beach -- resident won $4000 for his efforts and says the money will be put towards an art project. Mr Andrews works full-time as a laboratory technician and paints when he can. I m quite critical of my work but I always feel a sense of satisfac- tion when it s com- pleted, the father-of-one says. I like that feeling of contentment and hope that the viewer can understand the delight you feel in creating it. Judge Liam Davidson says Mr Andrews work features strong visual storytelling . It s an imaginative aerial perspective with a tension between distance and nearness that invites you to inhabit it with a people and a his- tory. I feel I could live with this painting and the story would never end, he says. Second place went to Ki Hyun Kim for his piece Rest. Charles Rose received third place for his Portrait of David Balcom. The results of the Lin- coln Green Sculpture Awards were also an- nounced at a ceremony on November 4. First place went to Donna Sarten for her creation Unspoken. Peter Brierley-Mill- man was second and Bernie Harfleet third. This is the 24th year the Waitakere Trust Art Awards have been run. The finalists work is on show at Projectspace at Corban Estate Arts Centre, off Mt Lebanon Lane, Henderson until November 14.
