Vault stands time's test Landmark tomb: Grave robbers broke into the Buchanan Mausoleum in 1985. By MATTHEW GRAY It's no surprise to learn that Edward Buchanan and his brothers were stonemasons. The huge monument and spire commemorating their lives at Waikumete Cemetery is a testa- ment to their skill and craftsman- ship. It is also significant as the first above-ground vault -- also known as a mausoleum, to be constructed in the graveyard a few years after its opening in 1886. Edward, George and John Buchanan emigrated to New Zea- land from Glasgow in 1861. The firm that bore their sur- name was initially based in Queen St and prided itself on using the best materials mostly sourced in New Zealand and across the Tas- man. The spire marking the Buchanan grave was sculpted from pink marble and imported from Scotland. It was no doubt a point of pride for the family and is still a standout grave among the old and toppled stones lying under its shadow. That may be why it attracted the attention of vandals in 1985. Cemetery staff were horrified to find someone had smashed a large hole through the concrete base at the back of the vault in order to gain access. Further investigation showed a small to medium sized person had wriggled their way into the vault and removed a skull from the remains laid out inside. Police were alerted and three teenagers were eventually tracked down and dealt with by the youth court. The missing skull was located in bush nearby. I cannot understand the sick mind that wants to go into a grave and do something like this,'' for- mer cemetery spokesman Bill Graham told reporters as news of the incident broke. The bodies have been laid to rest and then people come in and do this -- it shows a total lack of respect.'' Other prominent members of the Buchanan family include Edward's son James who, with brother-in-law John Taylor, built the original Auckland Hospital and public library. Both buildings were eventually replaced with larger versions.
