Photo: VANITA PRASAD By VANITA PRASAD As they sing E Poi the west Auckland Hospice's Nga Hononga o nga Tai o te ao Pasifeka sound hauntingly beautiful. The group is made up of hospice patients, fam- ily members and be- reaved families and meets every Thursday. It was started earlier this year to encourage Maori and Pacific people to use hospice services. Support group kauma- tua Reverend Fred Holloway, says Maori and Pacific people are generally hesitant about joining the hospice. Our people need sup- port but they won't ask for it,'' he says. It's not just a place you come to die, but you can't just tell them that -- they need come and see it for themselves.'' He says it's a place where Maori and Pacific people can come and feel comfortable. There's an aroha and a warmth which makes you feel welcome.'' Hospice patient Sally Hedley says the group exceeded her expec- tations. We sing, gossip and eat nice meals -- it provides a safe place for patients to meet.'' Call 834-9750 for more information.
