FIREWORKS Orange day: Merle Blakeborough, wearing her homemade gerberra hat, was one of the 50 collectors who helped raise money in west Auckland during Arthritis New Zealand's annual appeal week. The charity would like to extend its thanks to all those who gave to the cause. Health advocate: Sandra Coney was made a Companion of the Queen's Service Order for services to women's health on June 6. Here is a photo of Ms Coney receiving the medal at an investiture at Government House from Governor-General Anand Satyanand. Ms Coney is a councillor for the Waitakere ward in the new Auckland Council. Mayoral visit: Wayne Davis and Fanny Lam, with Invercargill mayor Tim Shadbolt at their church, the day after he opened his plaque at the Walkway of Fame at the Civic Centre in Henderson. Sea Scouts: Cubs from the New Lynn Sea Scout group, out for an evening's boating activity at French Bay, are pictured holding the community awards recently presented to them. The New Lynn Sea Scout group won the heritage and environment award in the Infantil/ Waitakere City Council Community Awards. They were also recognised for their entry in the sport and leisure category. This year the New Lynn Sea Scouts and the Friends of the Whau teamed up to make a joint submision in the awards based around the work they do together in helping to improve the environment around the Whau catchment. Heritage: Right, winners of the Avondale Community Library Living Heritage photography competition were announced recently. Crystal Bai won first place with her photo entitled Meet at Corner. The People's Choice award went to Richard Ren and highly commended went to Arthur Sella, who was not present at the ceremony.
